    A coalfield is a stretch of land with coal under the ground — often a lot of it, in layers, over a wide area. Towns grew on coalfields because people could mine there. You will meet the word in geography, history, and talk about old industrial regions. Walking across a coalfield you may see grass, roads, and houses, not black rock: the coal is below. It is not a farmer's field with coal sitting on top.

組成coal + field. Here field means a stretch of land rich in something under the ground, as in oilfield.

    • The amount of coal despatched in the Western Region is about 24,000,000 tons a year, nearly all from South Wales, though the Region includes the Forest of Dean, N. Somerset, and part of the N. Wales coalfields.
