A clockwatcher is a person who keeps looking at the clock because they are bored, tired of the job, or desperate for the work to end. The mind is already at the door; the eyes just check how many minutes are left. Offices and factories use it with a sigh or a smile of disapproval: this worker is putting in time, not care. You can also talk about clock-watching as the habit itself. It is informal and a little old-fashioned-office in flavour, more British in feel, and always a bit unkind as a label — nobody boasts “I am a clockwatcher”. Though actually checking the time once because you have a train to catch is ordinary; the word is for the pattern, the restless glance again and again. It does not mean a person whose job is to watch clocks, and it is not a sports timekeeper. You will see clock-watcher and clock watcher as well; the meaning stays the same.
