If something is clammy, it is a little wet, a little cold, and a little sticky — not dripping, not warm-wet like a bath. Nervous hands go clammy. A feverish forehead can feel clammy. A shirt that dried in damp air sits clammy on your back. Cave walls, cellars, a handshake you want to wipe off. In first aid, clammy skin is a small serious signal: cool and damp, and the person may be in shock. Weather can be clammy when the air is close and damp. People sometimes stretch it to a feeling: a clammy fear, that cold damp dread. Informal to neutral, and very common. The older sense is sticky, not 'like the sea animal'.
組成From older English clam, meaning sticky or slimy, plus -y. That clam comes from an Old English verb meaning to smear. German klamm is a cousin.
