The journey, or the act, of going all the way around something — the Earth, an island, a sea — and finishing where you began. It is the noun that sits beside circumnavigate: Magellan’s circumnavigation, a circumnavigation of Taiwan by yacht, a balloon circumnavigation of the globe. In history books it is a famous kind of voyage. In everyday talk it is still a rather grand word; for a walk around a pond most people would just say “we walked all the way around.” You may also hear it stretched to “the circumnavigation of a rule,” meaning finding a path around it, but the home meaning is travel in a full loop, not clever avoidance.
