A churchwarden is not the priest. In the Church of England, and in some other churches, the people of the parish choose one or two churchwardens — ordinary members, not clergy — to look after the church building, the things inside it, and the money. If the roof leaks, if something goes missing, if someone must sign a paper about the church’s land, it is often a churchwarden who deals with it. The title is respectful and a little old-fashioned. You will meet it in British parish notices and novels more than in everyday American English, where a church might say trustee or deacon for a similar job. There is another, rarer sense: a churchwarden is also a very long clay tobacco pipe (people used to rest the bowl on the ground). You will almost always meet the person, not the pipe.
