A chronograph is a tool for measuring stretches of time, not just reading the hour. In science and sport it can be an instrument that records how long something takes. The word you will actually meet most often is on a watch: a chronograph watch has extra buttons and hands so it can work as a as well as a clock. That is the same idea — measuring a period — in a smaller, wearable form. It is a somewhat technical word; at home people might just say . There is also a rare verb, to chronograph, meaning to record the time of something, but almost nobody uses it in ordinary talk.
