Choler is a very old, word for great anger — the hot, rising kind that makes a person snap. You will almost never hear it in the street; it lives in old stories, history, and a few careful writers who want that old flavour. Though actually, it did not start as a word for feeling. Doctors in Europe once said the body had four liquids, and one of them was yellow bile, which they called choler. Too much of that liquid, they thought, made you quick to rage — so the name of the liquid became the name of the anger. Today we do not use that body theory, but the word stayed, frozen in old English, meaning a fierce temper.
