When someone acts chivalrously, they behave in a polite, kind, generous, and honourable way — the old “good knight” way, and especially a man towards a woman. He might chivalrously hold a door, give up his seat, or walk on the outside of the pavement so she is farther from the cars. The picture behind the word is chivalry: the old rules for knights, who were meant to be brave, keep their word, and look after people who seemed weaker. Though actually, people do not all love this word now. Some still hear it as warm respect. Others feel it treats a woman as if she cannot manage, which can sound old-fashioned. You mostly use it of men. You almost never say a woman acted chivalrously, even when she was just as kind. It is a rather formal adverb; you see it more in stories than in street talk. In ordinary English people more often say kindly, politely, or like a gentleman.
