Chivalry originally described the rules of behavior that medieval knights were supposed to follow - being brave and honest, protecting weaker people, and having good manners, especially in battle. Today, "chivalry" is mostly used for polite, old-fashioned manners, especially ones a man shows a woman, like opening a door for her or letting her go first. Some people see this kind of chivalry as a nice, respectful tradition; others feel it's outdated - so the word can bring up different opinions depending on who you ask.
