A chivalrous man is polite, kind, generous, and careful of his honour — and, in the old picture, especially so toward women: he keeps his word, he uses good manners, he will not use his strength to be small with someone weaker. The word comes from chivalry, the knight's code in old European stories, from Old French chevalerous. So the deep picture is "like a good knight." Today people still use chivalrous as praise for courtesy and fairness. Though actually, some listeners now feel a pinch in "especially towards women": they like the kindness, but they do not want to be treated as delicate or less able. A chivalrous act can land as warm, or as a little old-fashioned, depending on who is in the room. It is a fairly careful, slightly word. You can stretch it to a chivalrous offer or a chivalrous silence — behaviour that puts honour and the other person first — not only to dating.
