Chiantishire is a joking British name for the Chianti countryside in Tuscany — and sometimes for Tuscany more widely — because so many upper-class British people, the ones from the highest social class, have houses there or go there on holiday. Speakers stick -shire on the end, the same ending as Yorkshire, as if this Italian wine country were one more English county. The word started appearing in British newspapers in the 1980s, first seen in The Independent. It is playful, and a little teasing: it can smile at villas and olive oil, or gently laugh at rich Britons who treat Tuscany as a backyard. You will find it in travel writing, not on a wine label and not on an Italian map. Though actually, Italians do not call their own hills this; it is an English joke aimed at English people.
