Characterise is the British spelling of characterize. As a verb it has two close everyday uses. You can characterise someone or something — describe their nature in a few strokes (“I would characterise him as careful, not cold”). And a feature can characterise a thing, meaning it is typical of it and helps you recognise it (“Long pauses characterise her speaking”). It is a slightly formal, essay-and-news word; in chat people more often say describe or “that’s so like her.” Though actually, British spelling is messier than school charts suggest: many UK newspapers and schools write -ise, but some British publishers, especially older Oxford style, prefer -ize because the Greek ending was -izō. Same verb, two house styles.
