A chairwoman is a woman who leads a meeting, a committee, or an organisation — the woman in the chairperson’s seat. In a formal meeting people may address her as “Madam Chair.” The word can mean the person who runs a meeting or, in a company, the woman who heads the board. Though actually, usage is changing. Some people still like chairwoman because it makes the woman visible; others prefer chair or chairperson, so the title does not mark gender at all. In many workplaces now, chair is the safest everyday word. You will still see chairwoman in newspapers and on older committee lists.
