If someone is censorious, they are quick to find fault and to show that they . The word is rather formal — you meet it in books and careful writing more than in the playground. It has the flavour of a stern judge. It comes from the old Roman censor, an official who watched public morals. Later, some people also heard it as censor + -ious, “tending to support cutting things from books and films.” The everyday meaning is still “harsh and ,” not “works as a film censor.”
