    A piece of land where dead people are buried. It usually does not belong to a church, and it is often kept by a town or city for everyone, so it can be large and have many graves in it.

    cemetery 中文常說「墓園」或「公墓」，指的是「一整片埋葬死者的土地」，不是單獨的一座墳（那是 grave）。它跟 graveyard 很容易搞混——graveyard 是教堂旁邊、屬於那間教堂的那塊地；cemetery 通常不屬於任何教堂，是整個城鎮共用的，所以中文的「公」墓剛好講出了這個差別，範圍也大得多。這個字可以想成「睡覺的地方」：它從希臘文「睡覺的房間」長出來，所以英文裡的 cemetery 帶著安靜、休息的感覺，常常有樹、有小路，家人會走進去看看。
