To caulk is to fill the holes or cracks in a ship with an or sticky stuff so that water stays out. Old sailors pushed tarred rope or pitch into the gaps between wooden boards. The stuff itself can also be called caulk. Though actually, people now caulk houses too — around windows, baths, and sinks — with a tube of thick paste. The first picture is a wooden ship; the everyday picture now is a bathroom. You will also see caulking for the job or the material.

組成From Old Northern French cauquer, from Late Latin calicāre, "to fill in with limestone", from calx, "limestone, chalk". The word does not split into living English pieces.
