Calculus is the part of mathematics that deals with changing quantities — for example, how fast a stone is falling at one moment, or how steep a curved line is at one point. School calculus usually comes in two big pieces: one about rates and (differential calculus), and one about adding up tiny bits, like the area under a curve. It is a senior-school and university word. The name comes from a Latin : people once moved little stones to count, and later the word moved into high maths. Though actually, doctors also use calculus for a hard stone in the body, such as on teeth; that is the old “” meaning, not your maths class. This entry is the maths one.
