    Calk is an American spelling of caulk. To caulk (or calk) a gap is to fill it so water or air cannot sneak through — the crack where the tub meets the wall, the seam around a window, a joint on a boat. The thick stuff in the tube is called caulk too. Though actually, in American shops and on tubes you will see caulk far more often; calk looks older, or like a short form some still write. It is a practical workshop word, not an essay word. (English also has a rare calk for a metal point on a horseshoe, and Calk as a name, but those are not this “how Americans sometimes spell caulk” sense.)
