Casework is the work a social worker does with one person or one family at a time: sitting with them, learning their problems, and trying to help that one “case.” It is not a speech to a crowd, and it is not only filling in forms — though forms are part of it. In social-work training, casework is often set beside group work and community work, which look at many people at once. It is a professional word, a little dry, used in offices and reports more than at the dinner table. “Case” here means a person-with-a-problem that the service has taken on, not a box, and not always something that will go to court. The person who does this work is a caseworker; casework is the work itself.
