Your caseload is the number of people — the number of “cases” — a doctor, social worker, lawyer, or police officer has to deal with right now. A heavy caseload means too many people and not enough time for each one; a light caseload means more room to breathe. “Load” here is not kilos on a scale. It is the amount of work you are carrying, the same idea as workload. People say a high caseload, a caseload of forty families, to cut the caseload. It is a workplace word, common in news about hospitals and social services, and it often comes with a complaint: nobody can do good work when the caseload is this high.
