A small old city in Kent, in the southeast corner of England. It matters far beyond its size because of its cathedral, the main church of the Church of England: the Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior bishop of that church and, in practice, a leading figure for worldwide. So in the news, "Canterbury" often means the church leadership rather than the place — much as "Rome" can mean the Catholic Church. In the Middle Ages huge numbers of walked there to the shrine of Thomas Becket, an archbishop murdered in the cathedral in 1170; those gave English both Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, one of the oldest famous works of English literature, and the word . The name is also used elsewhere — a region of New Zealand, towns in Australia and the United States.
組成From Old English Cantwara burg — "the fortified town of the Kent people." The old ending burg means a walled or defended town.
