In an engine, a camshaft is a long metal bar that turns. Along it sit cams — little egg-shaped bumps. As the bar spins, those bumps push the valves open and then let them shut, so air and fuel can go in and exhaust can go out at just the right moment. No camshaft, and a car engine cannot breathe. Mechanics use the word all the time; everyday drivers mostly meet it when something has gone wrong. It is a technical word, at home in garages and textbooks, not in casual chat.
