    A crankshaft is a long, strong metal bar inside an engine. The go up and down; the crankshaft is bent into throws — cranks — so that up-and-down push becomes a turning motion. That turning is what the rest of the machine uses. The tidy picture 'it turns the wheels' is a bit too tidy: the crankshaft turns inside the engine, then the motion goes through the clutch, the gearbox, and other shafts before the wheels actually spin. Mechanics say the word all the time; ordinary drivers may never say it. You find one in a typical car or motorcycle petrol engine.
