A cam is a wheel, or a raised part on a wheel, shaped so that turning it pushes something in a straight line, back and forth. That is how a machine changes round movement into in-and-out movement. You meet it in engines, pumps, and old factory gear. Mechanics say cam as a normal tool-word. Though actually, the cam most English meet first is short for camera, on phones and in CCTV; that is a different word that only looks the same. This meaning is the shaped wheel.
