If you are cack-handed, your hands do not do what you mean them to do. You drop the cup. You hang the picture crooked. The job comes out messy. British people say this; it is informal, a bit old-fashioned, and a bit comic — the kind of word a parent or a sitcom uses, not a school report. It can describe a person (cack-handed with tools) or the work itself (a cack-handed repair). So it covers two close pictures: in the hands, and badly done. Under the joke there is an older, ruder picture. In some places cack-handed was also a rude way to say “left-handed,” because people used to treat the left hand as the dirty one. You do not need that insult, and you should not aim it at anyone. If you use the word at all, use it for clumsiness, and know that it belongs to British talk, not to careful writing.
