To brown-nose is to be extra, extra nice to someone who has power over you — a boss, a teacher, a person who can give you a better job or a better grade — so they will like you, not because you mean the kindness. People use it to show they do not respect that behaviour. It is very informal, a bit rude, and it does not belong in a school essay. Though actually, the picture behind it is crude: it comes from putting your nose somewhere dirty and brown to please someone above you. English speakers still feel that, even when they say it lightly. In class, suck up to or flatter is a safer way to say the same thing.
brown-nose 是動詞，說的是對一個掌握你好壞的人格外討好，像對老闆、老師，或能決定你成績和工作的人，目的是讓對方喜歡你，而不是真心。它的說法是「to brown-nose」，後面接的是要討好的對象。
這個字很口語，有點粗，用的人通常是在表示看不起這種行為。它不適合放在學校作文裡。
字面的畫面比較粗俗，是把鼻子湊到髒的棕色地方去討好上位的人。英語使用者即使隨口說，還是會感覺到這個畫面。在課堂上，比較安全的說法是 suck up to 或 flatter。
