    A Brit is a person from Britain. Friends may say it lightly; on a form, or from a stranger, it can feel a bit blunt, like reducing someone to a label. Some British people use it about themselves; some do not like it in other people’s mouths. It is informal. The tidier words are for a person and British for the adjective (British food, a British passport). Though actually, students in Taiwan often say England when they mean all of Britain. A is a Brit in this loose sense, but they are not English, and they may not thank you for mixing that up. The short word showed up around 1900, cut from or , or pulled out of British.

組成A short form, in use from about 1901. It does not split further; it is clipped from Britisher or Briton, or cut out of British.
