A Briton is a person from Britain. In modern newspapers it usually means someone from the United Kingdom today. It is a slightly formal or written word; in everyday talk people more often say a British person, or they name the part they mean: English, Scottish, Welsh. Though actually, the tidy label hides a mess. Briton is not the same as English — a is a Briton in this modern sense, but may not thank you for calling them English. In history class, Briton can also mean the Celtic people who lived in Britain before the Anglo-Saxons arrived, so an old text and a news headline may not be pointing at the same group. Do not mix it up with Breton, which is a person (or the language) from Brittany in France — a cousin-word that took a different road.
