Brilliantine is an hair dressing men used, especially from the late nineteenth century into the mid twentieth, to make hair shiny and to keep it lying flat and neat. You worked a little through the hair; it left a gloss, a scent, and sometimes a stain on a hat-band or a pillow. Grandfathers’ generation knew it; young people now mostly meet it in old films, old novels, or a museum shelf. It did a similar job to today’s pomade or wax, but it was more oil than paste, and the point was that wet shine. The word can also be a verb, a little old-fashioned: to brilliantine one’s hair is to put this dressing on.
