A bricklayer is a person whose job is to build with bricks: walls, houses, chimneys, and the like. They set bricks in rows and put wet mortar between them so the wall holds when it dries. The work is skilled with the hands, and it is an old trade. In Britain the job title is often bricklayer; in loose everyday talk some people just say builder, though actually a builder may do many jobs, not only bricks. You meet the word on building sites and in job ads more than in school stories. A bricklayer is the person; the work itself is .
