    A bookplate is a small piece of paper, often rather pretty, with your name on it, that you stick inside the front of a book to say “this one is mine.” Collectors and people who love books still use them; some are little works of art, with a picture, a motto, and a name. Plate here means a printed or engraved slip, not a dish you eat from. The old Latin line you sometimes see on them is ex libris, “from the books of…,” but the English word is simply book plus plate. It is a quiet, slightly old, slightly fancy object. You will not hear the word every day, but in libraries and second-hand books you will see the thing itself.
