A nameplate is a small sign fixed to something, showing a name: who lives here, who works in this room, who owns this desk, or who made this machine. It is usually metal, plastic, or wood, and it sits on a door, a wall, a desk, a letterbox, or the side of a device. Not a huge shop sign — a small plate with a name on it. In an office, the nameplate tells you whose door it is. On a machine, it may show the maker. Quiet, practical, everyday.
名牌、銘牌(門上、桌上、機器上寫名字的小牌子)。台灣口中的「名牌」更常指名牌包那種精品,這裡不是那個意思。
