Blockbusting is the close partner of blockbuster. Used of a book or film, it means that thing is wildly successful — a blockbusting novel, a blockbusting film. You will meet it in reviews and ads, as a loud adjective (and sometimes as a noun in the same “huge hit” sense). It is from block + busting, the same wartime picture as blockbuster: something that could smash a whole city block, later stretched to entertainment that hits that hard. Most readers never think of the bomb. Informal to , a little breathless. (American history also has another, uglier housing meaning of blockbusting; that is not this sense.)
