A binman is the person who comes to your house or street to take away the rubbish. Bin here is the British word for the container you put waste in — what American English often calls a trash can or garbage can. The binman empties it into a lorry and moves on. In Britain you will also hear dustman, an older word from when people put out ash and dust. Formal writing prefers refuse collector or waste collector, and the people who do the job may prefer that too, because binman still says 'man' and women do the work as well. The word is British and informal: the kind of word a neighbour uses, not a government form. An American would more naturally say garbage collector. In the news you might still see 'the binmen are on strike.' It is not a rude word, but it is a bit old-fashioned. Though actually, the work is heavier and more organised than the cartoon picture: recycling boxes, food waste, different days, and trucks that lift the bins themselves. The person walking beside the lorry is still, in everyday British, the binman.
