A dustman is someone whose job is to take the rubbish from people's dustbins — the bins outside the house. This is British English. In American English people say garbage collector. Newer British English also uses refuse collector or bin man. The word is dust + man because, a long time ago, household waste was largely ashes and dust from coal and wood fires at home. Though actually, today's dustman takes far more than dust: food scraps, packaging, the lot. Older people in Britain still say dustman naturally; younger speakers may find it a little old-fashioned, but everyone understands it. It is an ordinary job word, not rude in itself, though the -man ending (like fireman) is something some workplaces now replace with a title that does not mark gender. There is also a German family name Dustmann, spelled that way; that is a different story from the British job.
