Bigamy is the crime of being married to two people at the same time. In most countries you may have only one husband or wife in the eyes of the law; if you marry again while that first marriage still stands, that is bigamy. News and courts use the word. Though actually it is narrower than “having more than one partner”. Secret second marriages are the usual picture. An open system of more than one spouse is polygamy, which some cultures have ; the law may still forbid it, but the everyday word for the hidden second wedding is bigamy. In Taiwan it is a named crime.

組成From older French and Late Latin bigamia: Latin bis (“twice”) + Greek gámos (“marriage”) + a noun ending. The pieces mean “two marriages”.
