bidding

noun

Picture a room where something is for sale and the price has not been fixed yet. One person names a number, the next names a higher one, and the price climbs until nobody will go higher. Bidding is the name for that whole climbing back-and-forth. It is not any single number in it — one number is a bid, and the bidding is what all the numbers together are doing.

A different picture, with no money in it at all. One person opens their mouth and says what is to be done; another person does it. Bidding here is the thing that was said — what you have been told to do. It never stands alone in modern English: it lives inside two fixed expressions, one naming the person who spoke and one naming the person who obeyed.
