Bengal is a large region in southern Asia. Today it covers the country of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, whose big city is Kolkata (Calcutta). For a long time it was one cultural area, with its own language, Bengali, also called Bangla. The Bay of Bengal is the sea beside it, and the Bengal tiger is named from this place. Though actually, when many people in Taiwan say 「孟加拉」, they mean the country Bangladesh; Bengal as a region is bigger than that one country, because West Bengal in India belongs to it too. The English name was borrowed from Portuguese Bengala, from Persian bangāla, from older Bengali baṅgala, said to come from an old kingdom called Vanga (the very last step is not certain). Bangla is a : a sister name for the same place and language.
