In 1971 it became its own nation after it split from Pakistan; before that, people often called it East Pakistan. Most people there speak Bengali, and the name Bangladesh simply means "Bengali country." It is a land of big rivers, and floods are part of the year. Do not mix Bangladesh with Bengal. Bengal is an older name for a wider area; part of that area is in India now. Bangladesh is the country.
