Belorussia is an old English name for the country we now call , in Eastern Europe, next to Russia, Ukraine, Poland, , and Lithuania. English speakers used Belorussia — and also Byelorussia — a lot when the land was part of the Soviet Union. After 1991 the country asked the world to say , and that is the name in English now. You will still meet Belorussia in older books, maps, and news. The name came into English from Russian. It has a piece that means “white” and a piece related to “Russia,” though people do not all agree why “white” is in the name. In Chinese, people still often say 白俄羅斯 for the same country: the English name changed; the Chinese one mostly did not.
白俄羅斯(舊英文名;現在英文多稱 Belarus,中文仍常說白俄羅斯)
