Belarus is a country in eastern Europe, with no coast of its own. , Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, and Poland sit around it. The capital is . It used to be one of the republics of the Soviet Union; it has been its own country since 1991. People sometimes fold it into “Russia” in their heads, though actually it is a separate state, with its own history and its own language. The name meant “White Rus” (White Ruthenia) — one of the old Rus lands, not a colour you can see on a map.
