Russia is a very large real country. Its capital is Moscow. A big part of the country sits in Asia, but its heart — the capital, much of its history, and the language you will hear named Russian — is on the European side. It runs from the Arctic in the north down toward the Black Sea, and from the edge of eastern Europe all the way to the Pacific. Officially it is the Russian Federation. Before the revolution of 1917 it was an empire ruled by a , a kind of king; later it was the centre of the Soviet Union; those are different chapters, but the name Russia is the one students meet first on the map. Though actually, everyday talk sometimes uses “Russia” as if it were a simple single place with one story, and that is tidier than the land is. Neighbours have their own names and histories. Use the name for the country; do not stretch it to mean every person or every past state in that huge space.
組成From Medieval Latin Russia, from Old East Slavic Русь (Rusĭ). That name first pointed to a group of Varangians — Norse people — who settled near Kiev in the ninth century and ruled the land called Kievan Rus. It probably comes from a Finnic word for those people, itself from an Old Norse idea of rowing, related to Roslagen in Sweden, where Finns first met the Swedes. Ultimately from Old Norse for “to row”.
