Belarusian is not the country itself — that country is , inland in eastern Europe, with as its capital, once part of the Soviet Union. This word belongs to that place in three ordinary ways. As an adjective it means “of ”: Belarusian food, a Belarusian passport, Belarusian history. As a noun it means a person from : “She is Belarusian.” It also names the East Slavic language of the country, written in , close to Russian and Ukrainian but not the same. In careful talk, people distinguish the language from Russian; in loose talk, outsiders sometimes treat them as one, which Belarusian speakers often do not. Stress falls on rus: bela-ROO-shən is close enough. You may still see Belorussian in old books; Belarusian is the usual spelling now.
