A beholder is a person who looks at something — the one doing the seeing, not the thing being seen. In ordinary talk the word almost never walks around on its own. You will meet it in one famous line: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That means what looks beautiful depends on who is looking; there is no single true answer that fits everyone. People use that line seriously and also with a smile. Though actually, games and stories sometimes name a monster a Beholder; that is a later, playful use of ‘one who looks’, not a second classroom meaning you need in order to understand the English word.
組成behold + -er: a person who beholds, i.e. who looks. From Middle English forms such as beholder and biholdere.
