    Beggary is the state of being very poor — so poor that you might have to beg, or live as beggars live. A war can reduce a family to beggary; a gambler may bring himself to beggary. It names the condition, not the person (the person is a beggar). The word is rare and literary now. You will find it in older novels, history, and set phrases like “reduced to beggary,” not in everyday Taiwan classroom talk. Though actually it can also mean the life or world of beggars as a group, but that use is even more old-fashioned. Do not stretch it to mean “a small request” or “asking a favour”; that is just begging, a different, lighter thing.
