Beggarly means poor — poor like a beggar, or so small and mean that it feels shameful. A beggarly room has almost nothing in it; a beggarly wage is insultingly low; a beggarly excuse is a thin, cheap one. The word is old-fashioned and a little scornful. People do not use it as a kind description of a person who has no money; that would sound cruel, as if poverty were a joke. Though actually the more living use is not “looking like a beggar” but “pitifully small”: a beggarly sum, a beggarly handful of votes. You will meet it in older books and in sharp, literary talk, not in ordinary chat. It can be an adjective, and more rarely an adverb (beggarly dressed), from beggar + -ly.
