You can hold one picture for the whole word: hot wax drawn on cloth, and dye that cannot get past it. Wherever the wax sits, the colour stays out and the cloth keeps what it had; everywhere else takes the new colour. Melt the wax off and the pattern is there. That single picture stretches three ways in English. It names the method, it names the cloth that comes out of the method, and it can be used as a verb for doing it. The wax line is the thing all three share.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary gives the word as borrowed from Javanese bathik. The craft and its name travelled together from Java, which is why English has no home-grown word for it.
