To barnstorm is to travel from town to town, stopping a short while in each place to put on a show: a play, a political speech, or, later, an stunt show. The picture behind the word is old American theatre — acting companies would play in barns when a town had no theatre, and they would storm the place, taking it by noise and energy. Early pilots borrowed it: they flew into a field, landed, and sold rides or did tricks. Politicians barnstorm when they rush through many towns giving the same fiery speech. It is mainly US, and a little old-fashioned now except in news writing about campaigns. It is not weather, and it is not an attack on a farm building.
