A barmaid is a woman whose job is to serve drinks in a bar. She stands at the bar, takes the order, pours the beer or mixes the drink, and hands it over. In Britain this was long the ordinary word; though actually, more and more places now say bartender for anyone, woman or man, because the work is the same. Barmaid can sound a little old-fashioned, and in some rooms it feels closer to “the girl at the bar” than to a job title. You still hear it in pubs, in stories, and from older speakers. It is not a maid who cleans a house — the maid here only marks that we are talking about a woman who serves.
