A bartender is the person who makes, pours, and serves drinks in a bar or restaurant. They stand behind the counter, take your order, mix a cocktail or pull a beer, and often chat a little. The word is everyday American English and is now common everywhere; older British English also said or , which mark the person’s gender, but bartender does not. It is a job word, not a rude word and not a very formal one. A bartender is not automatically the owner of the bar, and they are not a waiter on the floor — though in a small place one person may do both. In cocktail bars the work can be skilled (recipes, balance, show). In a quiet pub it may be mostly pouring and washing glasses. You can also meet the verb to bartend, “to work as a bartender,” in casual American speech.
